Commitment & Sacrifice by Kevin Newman Had the chance to interview John Furlong again, the CEO of these Games. It was six in the morning, and he had already done six interviews including NBC's TODAY show at 4 AM. This has been a very long journey for him. It's extraordinarily unusual that someone who was part of the Games bidding process ends up presiding over the opening ceremonies. Usually there are a couple of administration changes as scandals erupt, exhaustion sets in, or politicians switch power and want their own people front and centre. But Furlong has the advantage of benefiting from the complete trust of B.C. Premier Gordon Campbell, who has managed to cling to power throughout the period as well. For everyone associated with the Games, that has created an unusual degree of consistently and reliability. The broadcasters, sponsors and Olympic committees from other countries have known the same people in charge in Vancouver for eight years. Furlong, it should be noted, bore the weight of that with public grace and good humour. He's sacrificed a lot in terms of his personal relationships. When we spoke, he was wearing a pin created to remember all those who died during the eight years of various ailments, including his good friend Jack Poole who recruited him for the Games. And Furlong's duty to the Olympics will not end when the Games do. He's obligated to be part of a process helping Russia learn from Vancouver's lessons for the 2014 Games. People rightly have differences with Furlong over some of the decisions he's made, but no one should doubt his commitment or degree of personal sacrifice for the Games.
