Hardworking people from small Adriatic country establish strong enclave in
Northeast Ohio

By JAMES F. McCARTY
Plain Dealer Reporter

It would be hard to find a place outside of the tiny alpine nation of
Slovenia where Slovenian culture has had a greater impact than in Cleveland
and its suburbs.

While chances are that most people would have trouble locating Slovenia on a
map, two of Northeast Ohio's more prominent politicians called that Balkan
republic their ancestral home: Senator-elect George V. Voinovich, who grew
up in Collinwood, and the late Sen. Frank Lausche, who like Voinovich, was
Ohio governor and mayor of Cleveland.

There's also the Slovenian accordion player from Cleveland whose unique
style of polka music brought enjoyment to generations worldwide (Frankie
Yankovic, who died in October.)
