I remember being told that the survival rate is about 10%. Half do
not make it to the hospital, and only 20% of the ones who do survive.
That was about ten years ago, so the odds may have improved. Often,
legs have to be amputated as the blood supply to them have been
compromised by the body's efforts to protect the blood supply to the
brain.
