Dear 9/11 Family Members:
My name is Gloria Teal and I work for PBS’s weekly newsmagazine program,
Need To Know. Last fall, PBS's weekly newsmagazine program, Need To
Know,
teamed-up with SMITH magazine (_http://www.smithmag.net/#_
(http://www.smithmag.net/#) ) to create a segment called Six Word Memoirs
featuring the
stories of veterans from the Iraq and Afghanistan wars (you can see it here
_http://to.pbs.org/jkkWec_ (http://to.pbs.org/jkkWec) ). Inspired by Ernest
Hemingway's famous novel in six words, "For sale: baby shoes, never worn,"
the piece featured the veterans' six word memoir accompanied by a brief
interview about their combat experience and what life was like when they
returned home. The memoirs were extremely moving and gave viewers a unique
window into the experience of our nation's soldiers. The segment also
inspired a poignant on-line response from other veterans who shared their
experiences.
This fall, in recognition of the tenth anniversary of September 11th, we
are preparing another Six Word Memoir segment featuring the memoirs of
people who were directly impacted by the events of 9/11. The memoirs could be
a tribute to a life lost, a portrayal of lives forever transformed, a
description of the healing process, an account of the events of September 11,
2001, or any other experience that the participants would like to share. We
would like to work with anyone who is interested in contributing to the
segment.
The segment will be featured on both our web site and on television.
People are free to participate in two ways. First by simply contributing a six
word memoir for our web site. If people are interested in participating in
the broadcast version we would then conduct a brief audio interview so
that they could then put their memoir in context. We would also like, if
possible, participants to provide us with or video to use over their
interview.
