Astronaut Scott Carpenter, the second American to orbit the earth (and
whose Aurora 7 capsule came down about 400 kilometers away from the target
point, prompting a search that ended with his being discovered alive and well
and waving from his life raft), is reported dead at 88. John Glenn is the only
of the Mercury 7 astronauts still living:
