One bit of 9/11 history was that, when the US shut down its
air space, the incoming flights over the North Atlantic were
redirected to Gander, Newfoundland, Canada.
I'm sure most people here are familiar with the basics
of the story. In short, the Canadians were super duper
friendly.
Anyway, there was one classic "only in Canada" side story
which I just found out about courtesy of the documentary
about it, "Far and Away" (which had some showings yesterday).
People in lots of neighboring towns brought over plenty
of food. But... a big chunk of it required refrigeration.
So how did this small town keep gazillions of food
servings cool?
they commandeered the local ice skating rink.
(No Zambonis were harmed in this production)
