Norman Pattiz, Who Built a Radio Network From Scratch, Has Died at Age 79
Los Angeles entrepreneur provided rock concerts, Larry King and Dr. Ruth to
local stations across the U.S.
Norman Pattiz was sulking after losing his job as sales manager at a Los
Angeles television station in the mid-1970s. While listening to the radio, he
dreamed up a new plan.
Mr. Pattiz assembled a marathon of Motown songs and found national
advertisers to sponsor it. From his bedroom, he sold the package by
telephone to radio stations across the U.S. Thus was born Westwood One
Inc., which at various times distributed rock concerts, news and sports
programs, Casey Kasem's Top 40 countdowns, "The Dr. Demento Show" and talk
shows featuring Dr. Ruth, Don Imus and Larry King. An aspiring star, later
famous as Weird Al Yankovic, worked in the mailroom and fetched coffee.
In the 1980s, Westwood One acquired Mutual Broadcasting and the NBC radio
networks....
