Battery explosion temporarily disrupts ABC 6 Newscasts
We want to bring you up-to-date on a fire that happened this morning at
ABC 6 News that has disrupted our local newscasts.
Clean-up is well underway, with disaster recovery crews working
tirelessly. More than 50 dehumidifiers are set-up around the television
station to dry out water. Our hardworking engineers are assessing damage
and moving equipment to dry areas.
The fire began just before 1:30 a.m. Friday in a locker area of the
station. Security camera video captured the fire. At 1:24 a.m., the
security video shows smoke coming from an area where camera batteries are
stored. After several minutes pass, the video shows flames shooting from
the same area.
A producer at the station called 911 aftering hearing a pop and seeing
smoke.
Providence fire and police responded. Crews put the fire out quickly. No
one was hurt.
The fire damage was contained to the locker area. However, there is
significant water damage throughout the television station.
ABC 6 remains on the air with all your holiday programming. We will
