gotta mention my Pres. Carter related story

Two of my friends were ill with cancer a few years ago.

They had helped establish the Habitat Restores in Michigan, so
I wrote a note to Pres. Carter c/o the Center mentioning them
and saying it would cheer them up, immensely, if he could
send them a get wll card.

And amazingly, a few weeks later, they both got typed and signed
letters from him. Kind of formulaic and I doubt (but wouldn't be
surprised) if he signed them himself.

In either case, the fact he/his group responded like that
raised his profile to me even higher. [a].

Oh, even though there was no indication in Pres. Carter's notes
who had made the request, they figured out it was me. They
didn't thank me until six months later when I bumped into
them and saw it on display - they had each figured the other
one had given me the high five.

And yes, it made their days. Or weeks.

(Alas, one of them died. His cancer was, as much
as any can be, stable, but then Covid).

[a] I wasn't a big fan of him as President. I figured
he was just OK, etc. But all the stuff he's done since
then, especially in worldwide public health [b], etc....

[b] particulary his crusade against the Guinea worm, which,
as it only harmed/blinded/killed "them folk way out there"
was just about ignored in the West...
