Masamitsu Yoshioka obituary: Japanese airman in Pearl Harbor attack

Navigator and bombardier thought to be the last to have taken part in the "day of infamy" attack in December 1941

Masamitsu Yoshioka, a 23-year-old navigator and bombardier, took off from the Japanese aircraft carrier Soryu in a Nakajima B5N2, better known as a "Kate", before dawn on December 7, 1941.

Armed with a single 800kg torpedo he, his pilot and a rear gunner flew nearly two hours and 250 miles eastwards across the Pacific until they reached the US naval port of Pearl Harbor in Honolulu, Hawaii, just before 8am. Other Japanese warplanes had arrived first, and they found the US Pacific Fleet "all wrapped in black smoke"
