Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Will Shut Down in May

The news outlet, run by Block Communications for nearly a century, has been in a prolonged fight with unionized employees

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette will cease operations in May, its parent company said, citing significant financial losses and a recent court decision in its yearslong battle with unionized staff.

Block Communications announced the impending closure on Wednesday. The paper, which dates back to 1786, has been owned by Block for nearly a century.

"Over the past 20 years, Block Communications has lost more than $350 million in cash operating the Post-Gazette," the company said. "The realities facing local journalism make continued cash losses at this scale no longer sustainable."

The Post-Gazette has an average paid daily circulation of more than 74,000, according to its 2025 media kit, with an online publication and a twice-weekly print edition.

Unionized Post-Gazette editorial staff have been on strike since October 2022, pushing for better wages and healthcare benefits and accusing the company of years of bargaining in bad faith. Their last contract expired in 2017.
