Just a procedural point. Rather than contributing via email, shouldn't we be using JIRA? We should open items for Venkat and have him attach the patches there. We will need this audit trail latter on when we certify the pedigree of the code.

Before contributing anything to Apache you need to sign an Apache contributor agreement. The agreement can be found on
http://www.apache.org/licenses/#clas. The section titled "Contributor License Agreements" contains the agreement and some short information you should read.
To gain committer status you must first prove yourself to the current committers by providing patches. Once a trust is established between you and the committers one committer will initiate a vote. Other committers will then vote on your committer status. If the vote passes you're in and will get access to the Apache systems so you can directly make changes to the source code.
