The user is presented with a menu item to add a gadget even if Shindig is not
available. If a user attempts to upload a gadget they receive a rather
uninformative "There was a problem registering this gadget " error. The log
indicates a more useful error of "[java] java.lang.Exception: There was a
problem connecting to the Shindig metadata service"
At the very least the UI should report the actual error. Ideally the option to
upload the gadget would not be displayed in the first place.
