The Orthodox Christmas celebration follows a 40-day fast, only broken
on Christmas Eve when the first star appears.

Russians have Christmas Day on the January 7, in keeping with the
Julian calendar.

That is very interesting, I had no idea.

Can you imagine doing a 40 day fast!!! I have done a fast for healthy
reasons. But only for a few days at a time. It cleanses out the body
and rids the body of toxins. Maybe that's why Christians fast, to rid
the body of toxins and leave the body "clean" and "pure"?
