SAY IT RIGHT Getting started in HIV prevention work also involves saying the right thing. We are all affected by AIDS and we can all be part of the solution. Our words can either hurt and sustain misconceptions and prejudices or they can help inform and heal. As a reminder, it is better to say: People with HIV/AIDS or AIDS Victims / AIDS Sufferers People living with HIV / AIDS instead of AIDS Carriers / AIDS patients HIV or AIDS instead of AIDS Virus HIV Anti-body Test (HAT Test) instead of AIDS Test Risky Behavior or Vulnerable Population instead of High Risk Behavior Men who have sex with Men (MSM) instead of Gays Persons in Prostitution (PIP) instead of Prostitutes / Whores or Commercial Sex Workers Injecting Drug Users (IDUs) or Drug Users instead of Drug Addicts Sexually Transmitted Infections Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STIs) instead of (STDs) In general, it is helpful to avoid the use of terms and language that connote a negative image of people living with HIV / AIDS, stereotype them in a certain role or that gives a dark picture of HIV / AIDS in general. SO, SAY IT RIGHT!!!!!!!! Rene Job "RJ" D. Salsalida HIV and AIDS Specialist | Children in Ministry (CIM) | World Vision Development Foundation, Inc.
