Survey Says One in Three in G-7 Ignorant About AIDS
December 4, 2007
An ISPOS poll commissioned by the Christian charity World Vision found one
in three adults in Group of Seven (G-7) nations -- United States, Canada,
Britain, France, Germany, Italy, and Japan -- say they know little or
nothing about HIV/AIDS. The survey of more than 3,500 people was released
Thursday ahead of World AIDS Day.
AIDS is thought to have claimed the lives of more than 28 million people
over the past 26 years. World Vision President Richard Stearns said
millions are ignorant about the disease because it is "not real" for them.
"It's not personal, it is somebody else's problem and somebody else's
disease, and very often in a place very, very far away and remote from
their everyday lives," he noted.
According to the poll, Canadians are the most concerned about HIV/AIDS and
Japanese the least. Japan also had the highest number of respondents, 53
percent, who said they had little or no knowledge of the disease. Germans
were the most knowledgeable, with 80 percent saying they knew "some" or "a
lot" about HIV/AIDS. For the United States, the figure was 70 percent.
One in four residents of G-7 nations thought the problem of HIV/AIDS has
been "greatly exaggerated" by the media, the survey found.
Stearns said he believes those polled were "ahead of their governments" in
terms of how much should be done to combat the disease. Forty-four percent
of respondents said they would be willing to pay more taxes in order to
boost prevention and treatment efforts, including 50 percent of U.S.
respondents. "I don't think Washington realizes that that many Americans
care about AIDS at that level," said Stearns.
