As discussed here some time ago, the gettext support for the default
theme (the one that "comes" included into the WP download) is supposed
to be null. If you want the default theme "gettexted" (normally for use
within some multilanguage blog plugins) you should point to
http://svn.automattic.com/wordpress-i18n/theme/trunk/ and get the latest
theme's POT at
http://svn.automattic.com/wordpress-i18n/pot/trunk/theme.pot. Last time
I checked it out it was working fine.
