Do you have a locale that has a localised beta available (of say
2.9.1) that
I can test with?
Just built and published a Greek 2.9.1-beta1 (el).

Cool.
Ok. I took a standard 2.9 install and edited wp-config.php to have
WP_LANG set to el.
Went to Tools > Upgrade and upgraded to 2.9 in Greek.
Installed the Beta Tester Plugin
Went to Tools > Upgrade and upgraded to 2.9.1-beta1
It looks like at the moment the API returns just a non-translated
version of 2.9.1-beta1 in this case.

2.9 en_US
I don't have the ability to change the behaviour of that so I will see
if we can get it changed.
