When using a Page as your front page, it IS intuitive. The page link, instead of pointing to the page's URL, points to the blog's front page (no matter what the slug is). It's less intuitive when the front page is a listing of posts, because you have to use the Page Links To plugin or hardcode the link into your <ul> to get that link.
To handle that case within WP, we'd have to bring Page Links To into core (obviously with a better interface than having to add a Custom Field).
