I've never used a plugin I just use the htaccess and that's always worked well for me. Using a plugin is highly recommended if you aren't sure about editing your htaccess though. My sister used the old feedburner plugin though & the same thing happened to her, it stopped redirecting so I gave her my htaccess stuff instead. :P
