Okay, that's weird. I'll try a fully manual upgrade then and

Oh, what I mean by revision number is the latest revision
number of the 2.8 source code ('r10829' is the latest at
WordPress Trac at this moment for example) which isn't shown
in the 'version.php' file. It used to be shown in the Admin
footer during 2.7 development so it was easier to report bugs
vs revision number when using the automatic core upgrade feature.
