You need zlib not pclzip. The error refers to gzopen which is part of zlib.

Well I know that I should just stick with what works! but I like to

I've recently updated my Ubuntu Server install from Jaunty to Karmic
Alpha6, I also decided to move over to WordPress 2.9-rare. Since
upgrading the server I'm now getting the following error on any plug-in
updates "Abort class-pclzip.php : Missing zlib extensions" So this is
most likely a breakage in Ubuntu Server, I do have the package
libphp-pclzip installed, Now from what searching I have done on this
particular issue seems to relate back to early versions of WP 2.7 (ish)
prior to the auto update functionality.
So can someone please point me in the right direction to attempt to
resolve this issue! I've become quite accustomed to the auto update and
I'm disliking having to manually do it!

this is also impacting XML Sitemap Generator for WordPress 3.1.6
resulting in the following fatal error...

Errors, Warnings, Notices

Fatal error: Call to undefined function gzopen()
in /var/www/blog/wp-content/plugins/google-sitemap-generator/sitemap-core.php
