Ok I opened up the permissions on the server all the way and up the entire
directory tree from the wordpress dir all the way down to the
content/uploads/2010/06. That's where it's supposed to be going also opened
up 05 dir just in case. No changes failed to write to disc, from attaching
to a post and attachment failure when trying to upload straight to the Media
Library via Add New. The problem has got to be in the wp code somewhere. I
even tried unchecking the setting bar that says to organize these things by
month. That doesn't help either. I've backed up all my code so the only
other thing I can try to do is install RC1 again and see if I can find where
the program broke.

Hi Ron
When you say you can 'upload all day long right to the specific
directory' I assume you're talking about using ftp or your hosting admin
tools (cPanel or whatever). They may be running as a different user
than the WP install, so you could have permission errors that affect WP
that don't affect ftp or other tools. I'd recommend checking the
permissions on the upload directory and opening them up wider. Then see
if you can do an upload.
If that works, check the user and group name associated with the
uploaded file and compare that to the user and group of the directory.
You may find they are different and that could be the issue. You'll
need to change the permissions back afterward to keep it secure, but
changing the ownership of the directory to the same user that the WP
install is running as may be the solution.
Hopefully that is helpful, but there may be other issues as well. Good
luck.

Hi Christine,
There is no "offending photo" per se. I can't upload anything to the
media libraries via the dashboard Add New. I'm getting a "failure to
write to disc" error when I try it from uploading to as a post
attachment. If I go to media library and add new and try to upload I
get a message that says "file attachment failed". Well that's
certainly a problem when I'm uploading to the Media Library because it
should be just registering the upload as unattached. Now why it fails
to write to disc, I don't know how that could be a directly correct
error report as I can upload all day long right to the specific
directory I want, so it's not a server rejection issue. It has to be
in the code since with 2010 theme we're uploading 2 subdirs deeper
that what we used to. The site is www.hawaiisportsrap.com and
although I've made a few changes to textarea font sizing, there's
nothing I've added that should interfere with mediafile uploads.
Please feel free to tell me what ya think. I've seen literally no
attention paid to this and I'd think it was an important issue
regarding the stability of the release. I've been in software quality
assurance and control for much more complex products but not for open
source stuff that people are developing basically to be given away.
Thanks for responding
Ron

I've uploaded 50+ photos all over my posts & haven't run into an upload
problem yet. Mine tend to be small < 500k max. If you have a link to
a site
with the offending photo or want to email it to me I can try on my
system.

Christine
