I tried again, this time with no plugin installed, still the same white page.

I made that select (SELECT autoload FROM wp_options WHERE option_name =
'_site_transient_update_core') in phpmyadmin and returned this:
MySQL returned an empty result set (i.e. zero rows). ( Query took 0.0003 sec )

For those who don't know what the "error" is:

Downloading update from http://wordpress.org/wordpress-3.0.zip.
Unpacking the update.
Verifying the unpacked files…
Installing the latest version…
Upgrading database…
WordPress database error: [MySQL server has gone away]
SELECT autoload FROM wp_options WHERE option_name =
'_site_transient_update_core'
WordPress upgraded successfully

I didn't mean to turn this thread into a receiving line. ;-) The
prenatal was A-OK.

Did you try loading wp-admin/upgrade.php from your browser?
