No, it still attaches them to the post, same as always. The [gallery] code will even behave the same in that respect. If you want to see the images attached to the post, pick the Insert Media selection, then the Media Library tab, then change the dropdown to "Uploaded to this Post". Voila. With 3.5, the concept of a "gallery" has been divorced from the images attached to the post itself. No longer does the post attachments really define the gallery, but the shortcode itself defines the gallery. To edit an existing gallery, pick the Visual editor, click the gallery placeholder in the post, and in the upper left of that, click the "Edit Gallery" button. This will bring up the gallery editor with the gallery in place, for editing.
