well, I just checked in with the PC and it has finally moved past installing 
spybot and continued with the other installers - but it gave a -1 error for 
spybot.

It will.

Perhaps it's having some hard time with these special characters? 

Try adding "UTF-8" header to the XML file, it sometimes helps for 
uncommon characters.
