Running at shutdown, does that work on windows vista.
And does it show a window or something or does it just 'hang'

It does show a window, that tells the user that there is an installation 
running, like the one you get, when you install Windows updates at shutdown.

I have no experience with Vista, still no need to use it.
Best is to try on a test system, there is nothing that can get broken.
Start with something simple and advance.
