You have to disable async startup auf script via gpo. So the user is only able 
to login after all startup-scripts are finished. This also helps you with the 
vista/ win7 boxing problem.

You should also activate the display option for the skripts in your GPO. This 
will give some feedback to the user and at startup you will also avoid the 
protected desktop issue.

I am using wpkg with ad gpo at startup on windows 7 and XP (both german os 
version).
