Right, and it cannot work, regardless of samba version. Windows clients will only authenticate with their machine credentials when using kerberos, and that in turn requires an AD (or sth. compatible). While this is rather bad for anyone running a samba-only domain, it's not the worst thing in general given the security issues of NTLM(v2) authentication as used without an AD.
