First of all it needs more code maintenance and secondly it needs more testing. In fact you would have to provide all tests which deal with variables in to variants in order to prove that everything works as expected for all users. Moreover as stated already you can use either implementation and achieve all goals, it just depends on package definition. So I think it makes no sense to provide two different ways which both allow to do the same thing.
