HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO US! Four paws and 139 years ago this Sunday, a man named Henry Bergh convinced the New York State Legislature to approve the charter incorporating the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals--and thus the country's first humane society was born on April 10, 1866. The comforts Bergh gained for creatures just during his lifetime are enormous in scope--from establishing the first ambulance for injured horses to combating cruelty in circuses--and we're proud to continue his work today. To learn more about our founding hero and the early days of the society, check out our new historical-themed eCard, and please share it with all the animal lovers in your life. http://www.aspca.org/site/R?i=mAhwAFw43x8XSXLRAGHJvQ..
P.S. It's no accident that the ASPCA's birthday falls during our annual awareness campaign in April--Prevention of Animal Cruelty Month. For more on what you can do to crack down on animal cruelty, please visit ASPCA online. http://www.aspca.org/site/R?i=oG8l059LelYXSXLRAGHJvQ..
WRITE NOW: CAPTIVE BIG CATS NEED YOUR HELP! In December 2003, Congress passed the Captive Wildlife Safety Act, making it a federal crime to import, export, transport, sell, receive or purchase any prohibited big cat species--lions, tigers, leopards, cheetahs, jaguars and cougars--for the pet trade. But nearly 15 months have passed--and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service still has not issued regulations to implement and enforce this law.
The conditions under which these felines live are often substandard, if not completely inadequate. The result is extreme suffering for these animals, who are wild by nature, as well as a potential safety hazard for humans. Sadly, it is not uncommon for these big cats to be killed by law enforcement under exigent circumstances, placed in substandard zoos, or sold to "canned hunt" operations.
Big cats need your help, ASPCA News Alert readers. Please visit the ASPCA Advocacy Center today, where you can urge Secretary of the Interior Gale Norton to expedite regulations to implement and enforce the Captive Wildlife Safety Act. http://www.aspca.org/site/R?i=IyGm4pv5HFgXSXLRAGHJvQ..
ASPCA PET OF THE WEEK: "ORANGE" YOU GLAD? Wanna make sure you get your "OJ" every day? Then it's our pleasure to introduce you to this handsome boy, first brought to the ASPCA by a rescuer who found him on the street.
"OJ is a very affectionate cat who is full of adventure and a need to explore," says Gail Buchwald, vice president, ASPCA Cares, who is currently fostering the kitty in her office. "He'll love sitting in your lap, but he will also want to play. And his intelligence and curiosity will keep you on your toes." OJ's a major connoisseur of head rubs, and will let you know--loud and clear--when he wants them.
Potential adopters need to know that OJ has tested positive for antibodies to the feline immunodeficiency virus, commonly known as FIV. This virus affects cats only, and is mainly transmitted through the bite of an infected animal. Although more than 50 percent of FIV cats never show symptoms and live long lives--and although OJ's tests indicate he may even convert to a negative status--we recommend placing him in a single-cat home, or one with other FIV-positive cats. "Because any system in the body can be affected by this virus, veterinary checks are recommended annually, and whenever OJ doesn't seem to be eating or acting normally," explains Buchwald. "Also, FIV cats should be vaccinated very judiciously."
If you're looking to let some feline sunshine in, OJ's a sweet treat--please give him his second chance. To find out more about him, or to arrange a meeting, please call the Animal Placement department at (212) 876-7700, ext. 4120.
