Dear Mr. Bennett: I generally enjoy the poems you post on this website. Thus I am "replying" with a poem of mine. It doesn't directly relate to your poem, I don't think it does, anyway. But this is the easiest way for me to post a poem on this site. I'm new to this but have misplaced the instructions on how to do this independently of the reply option so, here goes:
St. Mark's Church Rite 10/04
By my painting skulls faces on eggs,
Will the dead be reborn
To a militaryless life?
I paint faint features.
My skull looks like a cartoon
Of the done, some long
Ago, some recent.
I paint only one for all,
Then sign the book with
My name and the word poet.
(Hopefully, no one in this
Church of poets will see
This list and decide I died)
And write next to my last
Changeable but constant title
"Savage", the words
"Iraq" and "Cambodia".
A day later someone gone inside me
Asks, Should I have added AIDS
Of the soon to be forgotten?
But the ritual is long over,
A demonstration not requiring
That strange unison in screaming
Which makes one melt
Into a crowd, a most
Uncomfortable loss of ego
Separateness, at least
So now I feel.
Painted eggs feel nothing,
Not even on Halloween
(Which this nearly was)
Or Easter, that curious
One time only very temporary
Rebirth Christians allow
No one else but their big daddy.
Still, death is apportioned
Out to everyone else;
First come, first served
Into collective compost soon.
