Subject: Please Help Manatees
PLEASE HELP MANATEES:
CONSIDER A YEAR-END GIFT TO SUPPORT MANATEE PROTECTION
Hi Alan,
As Save the Manatee Club moves into its 25th year of existence, you
can be proud of the many manatee protection measures we have won
over the years. These measures have been achieved because you
helped let decision makers know how important manatees are to you.
But the manatee protection we have all worked so hard to achieve is
being threatened. In 2005, as you know, the U.S. House of
Representatives passed the "Pombo Extinction Bill," which guts the
federal Endangered Species Act (ESA) and includes an amendment
specifically targeted to exclude manatees from protections under the
Marine Mammal Protection Act.
The ESA issue will be taken up by the Senate in 2006, and the fight
will be contentious. This battle is over the protection of endangered
species and their shrinking habitat. If we lose it, the survival of the
manatee population is bleak.
We need you to take action again and make an extra donation to
help us win: http://www.savethemanatee.org/shop/donate.cfm
We are so very grateful for your support, and with your help, we will
have the resources to tackle some goals vital to the protection of
endangered manatees in the upcoming year:
-Prevent attempts by Congress to destroy the Endangered Species Act
-Maintain manatee protection under the Marine Mammal Protection Act
-Block attempts by boaters' rights groups and political appointees to
downlist manatees in Florida
-Thwart marine industry lobbying to "streamline" state and federal permits
for marinas and docks resulting in reduced protection for manatees
-Push for additional manatee protection measures to offset the increasing
number of registered boats and development in manatee habitat
We are gearing up for a challenging year in 2006, and we need your help
to fight those who want to see manatee protections removed:

Put simply, developers and marine industries have made manatees a target
because they believe manatees are interfering with profit margins.
Please help us maintain manatee protection and boating safety measures and
stop poorly planned development, which will leave behind increased pollution,
habitat destruction, and the tragic loss of some of our most unique species
and pristine aquatic places.
Like David and Goliath, we are fighting a powerful lobby with lots of money
and elected officials on their side. For the sake of manatees, we must win.
Your special gift will help to leave a rich wildlife legacy for our children.

Thank you for your continued support.
