Dear Alan, WWF Victories in 2005... -There now is an additional 9.4 million acres of newly protected area in the Amazon rainforest. -There now can be an astounding 90% reduction in accidental sea turtle deaths. -For now the Arctic is still safe from oil drilling, protecting polar bears, caribou, and other Arctic animals. These victories are just three among a long list of critical milestones reached in 2005 that couldn?t have happened without your ongoing support. Thanks to dedicated WWF members like you, we were able to achieve these results: --WWF helped create millions of acres of new protected areas in endangered places such as the Congo Basin, the Amazon, and the Eastern Himalayas. The government of Brazil just initiated a process to work with WWF and others to designate three new parks in the Amazon, totaling some 6 million acres. --This last week the government of Ecuador permanently banned long-line fishing in a 40-mile radius around the Gal?pagos. --WWF conservationists undertook the first study ever to track pygmy elephants, a newly designated subspecies found only on Borneo, by satellite. --In the final hours before adjourning for the holidays, the Senate voted to strip a provision allowing drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge from the Defense Appropriations bill conference report. WWF?s Conservation Action Network activists played a huge role in this success. With only a few days remaining in 2005, it?s time we set our sights on 2006.
