Hello Kim,

I didn't realize any response on your questions, and I have been out of office, so I
will try to help now.
Please note that the following descriptions are for WS_FTP Server 4.0x mainly.

1) First note, that we do not use WS_FTP Server with IIS on one machine. Also I do not
have experience with IIS, so I do not know what it's "web site directory" means.
However, in case this is something like a root directory under which the particular
user folders (i.e. web sites) are located, you should be able to reflect this with
WS_FTP Server while configuring the same root directory as "Top Directory" in "General
Options" for the related FTP host. If you use the user database of WS_FTP server, I
cannot see security issues. The disk access is then by SYSTEM anyway, and users can
only modify their own folder (tree), depending on how this is set up (suggestion: user
folders under root, do or do not list user folders, auto create user home folders,
logon users to home folders, do or do not disable public access directory, do or do
not lock user to home directory). The "do or do not" is whether or not a user should
be able to see other users' folders.

2) Yes, it is easily possible to include non-user related folders. Any folders created
manually under the user root top directory which are not related to a user, will be
visible to all users for list and read. If this list/read profile is not sufficient or
not what you expect, you may create a virtual folder (e.g. cgi-bin) where you can
assign the rights as needed to "*everyone" or a certain user group.

Any more questions? Please come back to me.

Regards,
Erich

Hello,

I am new to WS_FTP Server and working with the IT people here to set a
server up. We are planning to use WS_FTP in conjunction with IIS to
create web space accounts for students and have some questions that
perhaps some of you have already resolved.

1) We are configuring WS_FTP to create home directories for the students
in the default web site directory. Are there any security concerns I
should be aware of by setting up WS_FTP to set up web space?

2) When we create home directories for the users, is there a way to have
WS_FTP include some files and folders in that home directory? For
example a cgi directory?

Thank you,

Kim
