Adrian,

So far as I know, you only have two choices, the W/S is never going to
actually see the modem in the server, but you can light up Routing and
Remote Access Services (RRAS) on the server, and "Host" the modem connection
for your network, including the W/S in question.

You refer to modem sharing as being something that you do not want to
enable, if you have well founded concerns about that, those concerns will
also likely apply to the RRAS solution as well, and the modem sharing is
just as less feature rich version of RRAS anyway. A VPN is a feature of
RRAS however, which you may want to explore.

If what you were after is to simply configure your W/S to use a virtual COM
port that is somehow attached to the modem in the server, I do not believe
that can be done. Not with Win2K native features anyway.

Subject: [WS_FTP Forum] Remote modem - How to?

Hi, I'm new to this list so if the question as been asked recently, accept
my apologies and please send me in the right direction.

I have WS_FTP pro sitting on a WIN98se BOX if I use a local modem all is
cool. but...

I have now networked the above box and want to FTP via the modem on my
server (I have not/do not want to install modem sharing on the server). Has
anyone managed to do this or does anyone have any ideas please.

More info...
The server is WIN2000 Server, running DHCP, DNS, squidNT, a mailserver, I
have two workstations, all connected by a mini hub. everything else works
fine!

I can not ping the outside world or trace route from the W/S (okay from the
server) but I can resolve addresses when trying. The server address is set
as the gateway for the W/Ss the same address is also set for the DNS server.

WS_FTP pro returns the following error when trying to connect via the Server
Modem,

<SNIP>
Finding host anydomain.net
Connecting to qqq.qqq.qqq.qqq:21
Connect failure
</SNIP>

If I try FTP at the console on the 98 box I get

<SNIP>
ftp> open anydomain.net
> ftp: connect :10060
ftp>
</SNIP>

I've checked the error and it implies that the W/S can't see the modem.

Any help gladly received

Have a great Christmas everyone
Kind regards
Adrian Wells
