Not sure which update stopped your ftping, as I have all updates and can still ftp....But to shut off the Auto updates...Right Click my computer>pick properties>updates>turn off auto updates.>Then go to Windows Update site. The only thing I can suggest is download and install one update at a time...doing a restore point before each and test. This will take a while, but you will know which one you don't want.
