Hi back...
While the work around would allow the user to assess
the Folder, this is a poor option. The behavior change would mean that the
user would now be able to "List" all the contents of the Folder and this is not
what I need or wanted... I need the user to have access to the folder for
delivering files to me but not to be able to see what is in the folder. This
folder is used by 600 different users to deliver files to me and I did not want
them to have visibility of the the other files. This change has been enough of a
problem to make me need to go back and start re-evaluating other products
to replace the 8 WS_FTP Servers I currently have unless this can be
fixed.
The other option of not including the folder in the "user
home folder" and having them manually move to the correct folder is also not
workable. These 600 users are using scripts to perform these
transfers and all of these scripts would need to be re-written to gain
access to the correct folders. Additionally for the user to be able to CWD to
the correct folder/directory I would need to make more of my folder/directory
structure public than I want to or should be made to do. This is one of the main
reasons for using Virtual Folders and now it has been invalidated.
As to this being an intentional change and not a
"Bug"... I find that laughable. This change was not documented in the release
notes and the user manual still states clearly that "List. The user can display
a listing of the folder contents." on page 48 and 49. There is no mention that
these rights a related to the Folder itself, all mention of rights are related
to the contents only. Also on page 50 "To have
virtual folders appear in user’s home folders, select the Include in user home folder
listing option. When this option is selected,
Do not include in top-level directory
listing will
also be enabled." Under this new "Feature" these are no longer true.
This is a major change and has created a big problem for me
and has invalidated all of the documentation provided for Release 5. How many
other "undocumented changes" have been made to this release? Rather than
trying to "cover your six" and pretend this was an intentional "feature" just
FIX THE BUG! This new "feature" actually reduces security options available to
the Administrator and provides nothing useful. If the Administrator has selected
the Include in user home folder listing option then that is a
pretty clear indication that the folder should show in the home folder view no
mater what "contents" rights have been conferred upon the user.

[T2004061102R8] Hi,
Thank you for the information. This has been logged as an issue to be
addressed by the R&D department. It was actually changed due to
requests that we had in previous versions. Since the release of version
5.0, we have had many users speak out against this change. I would like to
be sure that you understand that “as a workaround” your users can manually
change to the directory and they will still have Write and Delete
permission. To allow the users to see the folder from their home
directory, you will have to add LIST permissions. Thank
you, Julie

[EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Hi, I have noticed a major
behavior change in the way WS_FTP Server V5 deals with Virtual Folders that are
flagged to "Include in user home folder listing". In the past a folder could be
set to show in the home folder, Allow Writes, and Allow Deletes but not
allow the user to List Contents by removing the "List" right. In the new version
the folder will not show in the home folder listing even when the "Include in
user home folder listing" option is selected unless the user has "List" rights.
This "Bug" is causing some major problems for me as I had several folders on
several servers that I did not want users to be able to "List" but they must be
able to "Write" files into this folder.
