In general, I'd discourage this practice. C:\ should be for Operating System files and potentially Application binaries only. Program data should be on a different drive. Preferably, a separate PHYSICAL volume, but a logical partition works as well. Why? Several reasons off the top of my head... If your C:\ partition corrupts (virus, bad boot block, failed service pack, etc.) everything on that partition is at risk. By separating your "data" from your Operating System, you provide a measure of isolation and safety. >From a backup perspective, you know if you backup your "data" drive successfully you have the MOST important stuff safely stored. O/S's and Applications can be reinstalled back to drive C:\ in an emergency, but can your data be re-created? >From a systems management perspective, if your C:\ drive becomes 100% full your Operating System has a high likelihood of seizing. You may find yourself in a situation where you can not even boot the system if there's not adequate room for working / temp / swap files on startup. A uncontrolled FTP upload that fills your DATA drive (not your O/S) drive does not cause your operating system issues -- it just causes application issues (can't upload, drive full!) until you free up space. Their current server is running on an NT 4.0 server with the app installed on the "E:" partition and the actual data files on the "F:" partition. I only want a "C:" partition on the new server and was wondering what settings in the registry would need to be changed to make this happen. I'd like to be able to export and import the registry from the old server to the new to maintain the WS_FTP settings. Any advice? Troy D.
