Content negotiation by mime type is one thing, but because of the context
(targeting IE5) I assumed user agent sniffing, which is another thing
entirely. Maybe I misunderstood.

I'd also second Peter's comments - we're on the same page but he was able to
explain himself much better than I was.

BTW: hiding from netscape using @import is a hack :)
