Here I was about to say "this works for Moz but not IE, same with enclosing the UL in a DIV with background colour"... then I thought I'd better make sure I didn't have an XML prologue on the test page!
Egads! Quirks mode strikes again.
IE5 and IE5.5 aren't perfect, but all the other browsers are fine.
