The 2003 awards are platform independent, accepting various interactive formats:
Websites (narrowband and broadband) 
  • CD-ROMs
  • DVD-ROMs
  • Intranets
  • Extranets
  • Interactive TV (iTV)
  • Video-on-demand (VOD)
  • Mobile and SMS messaging
  • Console games

Works developed for other platforms such as games consoles and mobile networks were welcomed and encouraged. Note however, where specialised hardware is required to run the work, you may need to provide AIMIA, and its judging panel with access to this hardware.

Explanation of Categories

This is a brief outline of the 16 categories for the AIMIA Awards 2003.
The AIMIA Awards are delivery-channel agnostic i.e. they encompass all distribution channels where multimedia elements are incorporated e.g. CD-ROM, DVD, intranet, website or iTV.

All web-based entries should comply with  Priority 1 of the World Wide Web Accessibility Guidelines (see http://www.w3c.org/TR/WCAG10/full-checklist.html)

Nominations close December 7th 2003 and finalists will be announced at the Awards Ceremony in February.

1: Best Learning / Reference

eContent that serves the needs of learners and skills for a complex globalising world. eContent that transforms schools, educational institutions, universities and other educational institutions through interactive, personalized and distributed learning resources; creating active eLearning communities and target models and solutions for corporate training, supporting early steps in multimedia.

Entries may also include eReference materials such as encyclopaedia's, bibliographic guides, libraries, research sites or corporate reference products.

2: Best Entertainment

This category includes digitised entertainment products and services designed to entertain the participant; supporting movement from one-way to two-way; from single to multi-player; interactive entertainment and the synergy between analog and digital platforms.

3: Best Cultural

Content designed to preserve and present  cultural heritage in line with the challenges of the future; demonstrating valuable cultural assets clearly and informatively using state-of-the-art technology. Includes content which promotes, explains or documents Australian cultural activities or concepts.

4: Best Business

eContent which supports and optimizes business processes; creating new business models in eCommerce and mCommerce, business to business, business to consumers, internet security and other areas supporting SME's, suppliers, wholesalers and governments in the convergent marketplace.

5: Best Health

Entrants will have developed eContent for the consumer-centred model of healthcare - where stakeholders collaborate, utilising ICT, including internet technologies to manage health issues as well as the health care system.

6: Best Science

eContent that fosters global collaboration in key areas of science and the next generation of infrastructure that will enable it; providing measures to promote and demonstrate scientific processes and make them accessible to citizens; scientific projects articulated through new media.

7: Best Government

Entrants will have set up eContent systems that empower citizens and serve public services clients; fostering quality and efficiency of information exchange and communication services in governmental and public administrative processes; strengthening participation of citizens in information society decision-making.

8: Best Inclusion

Entrants will have developed a measure which supports IT integration of least developed communities into the Information Society. Reducing the "Digital Divide" between technology empowered and technology-excluded communities and groups - such as indigenous communities, rural areas and women. Bridging society through interactive media.

9: Best Children's Product or Service

eContent specifically developed for children - including games (not necessarily educational) and educational material developed for children (pre-teen).

10: Best Advertising /Marketing

Corporate, organisational or other eContent which demonstrates best practice, innovation and excellence in promoting, advertising, communicating or marketing a product or concept.

11: Best Arts / Lifestyle / Non-Profit

Entries cover artistic eContent; work which promotes for example, travel or hobbies wine, or communities/activities of interest that promotes, explains or documents non-profit initiatives.

12: Best Student-Developed Content

This category is open to all full-time students to present their work developed individually or collaboratively in classes or at school, college or at university.

13: Best Emerging Exporter:

AIMIA is proud to announce its inaugural Best Emerging Exporter Award for Australias interactive media industry.

This category is open to all Australian interactive media developers who have successfully completed an Export transaction.

Enties are invited from Australian developers:
  • Who have been exporting for no more than 2 years
  • Australia must be the main place of business
  • Export revenues must be over A$5,000

14: Best New Digital Content (any Platform)

A category for innovative digital applications on emerging platforms. Submissions can include content developed for iTV, 3G, broadband and enhanced mobile networks.

15: Best Game

This category includes all forms of electronic games created by Australian developers for local and international markets. Entries can range from board games adapted for the Web to console games for single and multi-player environments. Entries cover games for all ages and all platforms. Games will be judged by an international panel of game industry experts.

16: Best of the Best 2003

This award is given to the winner of one of the above categories which judges assess as the best overall nomination for the year 2002.
