A good write up on why the W3C doctypes sometimes appearing on the w3c site don't often work outside of that site, also how to fix it in code editors like DW. Most editors have a template file you can fix the doctype in.

Thanks Robert, I'll have a look at that and see.

As to the Doctype, I have to admit to being confused. I cut and pasted that
from the W3C site, and it validates.    Is there a site with the definitive
statement as to what the doctype has to be?
