Hi all,

Over the last few months we have had a steady increase in users joining the
list. Just in the last 48 hours we have had a large increase in members from
the CSS-F list.

So, first of all, welcome to all new members. We hope you find this list
friendly, helpful and informative! We also look forward to your
contributions in the future!

MAIL LIST ISSUES
There has been a number of comments in the last week about increasing
traffic on the list, especially to do with "CSS help". In some ways this
shows that the list is a success. People feel confident about asking
questions and posting comments. It proves that the list is alive and
kicking. However, the downside is that some members are finding this
increased traffic a problem.

We have had a number of helpful suggestions and we have looked into them all
in detail before getting back to you.

We have come up with two things that should help the list and all members;
guidelines and a discussion room.

MAIL LIST GUIDELINES
We have produced a simple Mail list guidelines document. Please read this
carefully:
http://webstandardsgroup.org/mail/guidelines.htm

The problem with guidelines are that they seem very rigid and formal. This
information should be seen a GUIDE ONLY - simply suggestions to make life
easier for everyone on the list.

Please remember is that we are hear to facilitate the list, not run it. So,
if there are things you want to change in the guidelines, let us know!

DISCUSSION ROOM
We will soon be setting up a posting and commenting tool (let's just call it
a discussion room) that allows any member to post a topic and then any
member can comment on this topic.

This is an extension of the list, not a replacement. It would be used when
threads become too long winded, or slightly obscure. For example: If someone
posted a question and 30 members respond, all other members are forced to
download these 30 posts even though they may not have any interest in the
topic.

However, when the discussion room is in place, this will change. At any
time, a topic that seems to be growing too long could be moved to this
discussion room. The discussion can continue, but only people who want to
participate or read more need be involved. The general list can go on
without major interruption. Hopefully this will cut down on some traffic,
without affecting the flow of useful information.

We will test this concept for a two month period and then ask for feedback
from all members. If the overall feedback is good, we will make it a
permanent feature.

WEBSITE
We will be doing major renovations to the website in the coming weeks
(including the addition of the discussion room). More about that soon.

Thanks to everyone who has participated on the list or in meetings so far.

If you want to offer suggestions, ideas, comments etc - feel free to email
us ([EMAIL PROTECTED]). Enjoy the list!

Russ and Peter...
