I was forced to use Dreamweaver at first because I was working a contract for a client who provided it. I was sceptical, because I’d used earlier versions and found it frustrating and annoying and a damn waste of time.
However Dreamweaver MX2004, the current version is nothing like that version. It’s fantastic. And as Leo says, its all based on XML or html – everything is editable by the owner. So for example , I have changed the default documents to include my customary file header - file name, author, version number etc – and because I do a lot of ColdFusion development, I have changed the default from html docs to .cfm docs, with html as an option.
The CSS functionality is fantastic, although not quite as good as Top Style. I do most of my work in the code view, so I can’t really speak for the design view, but people I know who use that think its great too.
And most of all, Dreamweaver doesn’t try to say it knows better than you what code should be there. It wont go changing anything that you don't want changed. I use the validators, and the code clean up to remove empty tags and close unclosed tags, to point out errors based on the doctype, and I use the code sweeper to tidy up the layout and make everything neat and tidy.
I like the way you can round trip back and forth between Fireworks and Flash and Freehand without having to close and open things separately.
I think Dreamweaver is a thoroughly professional development tool for anyone who’s building web sites seriously.
