I agree. It's a bit crazy. I mean, web standards are a great thing and have great benefits as I'm sure most of the people on this list will agree (which is why we've signed up to it, right?). Each bit of the standards are there for a well thought reason. Deciding to add little bits here and there, especially in the case of bringing back tags and attributes that have been taken out, is breaking the standard. Just because something is valid doesn't mean it's a standard. Hmmm... I think I'll have a Strict XHTML document... but I like the font tag, so I'll have that too.
