As I'm sure many of you are aware, one of the W3C standards is RUBY.

The standard seems primarily focused on annotation to aid in the reading of some languages such as Japanese and Chinese. Another example given is to write "month," "day," and "year" above a date. In printed form I've seen the technique used in some prayer books either to give and "interlinear" translation from Hebrew to English, or as an annotation in some all Hebrew ones.

While the above examples are all useful, what I'm wondering is whether it has a more general usefulness?
