Well, I've been away from email for a few days, and I've carefully combed
through the ton of posts I came back to, but it looks like the response to
my queries has been truly underwhelming. I do offer my sincere thanks to the
two people who responded to my JavaScript problem, but I must confess to
being disappointed that no one has offered any critiques of the site itself
or solutions (or even suggestions) on how to deal with the other two
problems. When I put the question about the JavaScript validation there, it
was something of an afterthought which I'm now almost wishing I hadn't
included (although that might have meant that the whole post would simply
vanish into obscurity like when I first posted these questions a few weeks
ago).

So I'm left with a few possible conclusions:
a) The questions weren't on-topic enough to be worth answering - don't think
this one is the case.
b) The questions weren't interesting enough to be worth answering.
c) I'm just chatting to myself here - really hope this one isn't the case.

I know I don't tend to contribute much to the discussions on here, but
that's mainly because I'm so new to all this that I don't really have much
to say. But I would really really value some help from all of the people out
there who know more about web standards than I do, because I really am
trying to learn. I've learned a lot from this list already, just by reading
the answers to other people's questions, and because the level of response
has generally been good it's left me feeling kinda let down now that I've
come forward twice with my own query and not gotten much response.

I'm sorry if this is coming across badly. I just needed to see if there was
a good reason behind me not receiving much in the way of help.

Since I'm deeming it unlikely that anyone will still have a copy of my
original email, I've included it below this one just in case.

Cheers,

Seona.

--------------------------------------------

Hi guys,

I have a new site that I'm working on for a client and am doing my best to
make it as standards-driven as possible. So aside from having a look and
telling me how I've done so far, I'd also like some help in fixing a couple
of little glitches that are annoying the heck out of me.

The first issue is that in the plain HTML prototype that I created, the left
and centre columns sat up against the top of the window like they are
supposed to. I then added a bunch of Cold Fusion code to start making the
site dynamic as it needs to be, and now these two columns have bumped down a
fair amount. The funny thing it, it's not everything that has bumped down in
the left-hand column - the logo space at the top used to have a gap between
it and the next box in the column, and now it's as if this gap has simply
moved to the top (i.e., the logo has moved down, but the box below it
hasn't). Can anyone suggest why this is happening?

The second problem is with the last box in the left-hand column. I want to
give it rounded corners like the ones above it, but unlike the ones above it
which are of a fixed size, this last box will contain a variable amount of
text. So I tried using the Custom Corners II article on A List Apart, since
it deals with putting rounded corners on boxes that sit on gradient
backgrounds, but I can't seem to make it work without breaking the rest of
the design. Can someone suggest a way that it can be done? Or will I just
have to abandon that design idea?

<snipped because this bit actually got responded to />

Anyway, the page can be seen at:
http://216.119.123.23
It's still very much under construction, so most of the links don't work yet
- just a warning. :)
The css is at:
http://216.119.123.23/_styles/sample.css
And for anyone who wants to compare it with the original prototype to figure
out a way around my first problem, this is available at:

So, help, advice and critiques are greatly welcomed.

Cheers,

Seona.
