Here is a DW extension that strips out the whitespace to solve this issue:

http://www.dwfaq.com/store/detail/?id=faqStrpLWS

It automatically strips the whitespace, you don't have to do anything
once it's installed, though it can also be run manually.

And it's free.  :-)
