Actually ive just remembered another possible method i've used before 
based on the premise that some columns will always be wider than others eg:

Price   Item
$5      Really Really Really Wide nested table
$2      Fixed width css styled div
So why not try setting a fixed column size for columns like 'Item' which 
are inheritantly wider than others, so the content wraps eg:

Price       Item
$5      Really Really Really
        Wide nested table
$2      Fixed width css
        styled div
